In 1998 Seiko presented the first complete Spring Drive prototype to the public at the Basel show. The following year (1999) Seiko released the first production models available for purchase.
The initial release was comprised of three different models, a Credor and two Seiko models. Each of these were limited editions and they were sold only in the Japanese market.
All of the models were based around the 7R68A or 7R78A movements. This first spring drive movement has 30 jewels and was hand wound. The calibre has a date function as well as a power reserve display to show the maximum 48 hour reserve. I believe that both the 7R68 and 7R78 calibers are fundamentally the same but the finishing is different between them.
The two Seiko models were the SBWA001 and the SBWA002.
Seiko SBWA002 – one of two releases of the very first Spring Drive movement, manufactured of 18k gold and was made for the Japanese market. Has a date and power reserve complication and display caseback. It’s extremely rare, only 300 pieces were made.
Seiko SBWA001 has a case and caliber number of 7R68-0A10 and was a limited edition of 500 units.
The initial Credor model was the GBLG999, this has a calibre and case number of 7R78-0A10 and was presented in a Platinum 1000 case. This was a limited edition of just 100 units.
